A work permit or authorization to work without a permit is required in order for a foreign national to be allowed to work in Canada.
It sets out conditions for the worker such as:
the type of work they can do,
the employer they can work for,
where they can work, and
how long they can work.
Post-graduate work permit
Allows students who have graduated from eligible Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs) to obtain an open work permit to gain valuable Canadian work experience. Skilled Canadian work experience in National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill type 0 or skill level A or B that is gained through the PGWPP helps graduates qualify for permanent residence in Canada through the Canadian experience class within Express Entry.
Applicants can receive only 1 post-graduation work permit in their lifetime.
Program Requirements:
Must currently hold valid temporary status or have left Canada,
Must have graduated from an eligible designated learning institution (DLI),
Have completed an academic, vocational or professional training program at an eligible institution in Canada that is at least 8 months in duration leading to a degree, diploma or certificate,
Have maintained full-time student status in Canada, exceptions can be made only for the following: leave from studies, final academic session,
Have received a transcript and an official letter from the eligible DLI confirming that they have met the requirements to complete their program of study.
Open work permits
An open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada, except for an employer:
who is listed as ineligible on the list of employers who have failed to comply with the conditions or
who regularly offers striptease, erotic dance, escort services or erotic massages
You can only get an open work permit in specific situations.
Employer-specific work permit
An employer-specific work permit allows you to work according to the conditions on your work permit, which include:
the name of the employer you can work for
how long you can work
the location where you can work (if applicable)
A person who holds this type of work permit can only work for the employer for the length of time specified, and if applicable, at the location shown on the permit.
Co-op/Internship Work Permit
Foreign students who wish to participate in a co-op or internship program in a Canadian institution must apply for a work permit as well as a study permit.
Requirements:
Must have a valid study permit or apply for the work permit in conjunction with a study permit.
Intended employment must be an essential and integral part of your program of study in Canada.
Employment must be certified as part of your academic program, by a letter from a responsible academic official of the institution.
Co-op or internship employment cannot form more than 50 percent of the total program of study.
